Gel, Dip, or Acrylic: How to Pick the Right Nail Service
Every nail menu lists these three side by side with no explanation, so most people pick based on habit rather than what actually fits their hands and their week. Here's what separates them.
Gel manicure
Gel polish is applied over your natural nail and cured under a UV or LED lamp between coats. It looks close to regular polish but holds shine and color for two to three weeks without chipping. The upside is a natural finish and a fast appointment. The tradeoff is that gel doesn't add strength or length — if your natural nails are thin or prone to breaking, gel alone won't fix that.
Best for: people who like their natural nail shape and want color that survives daily use without added length.
Dip powder
Your nail is coated in a bonding liquid, then dipped into colored powder, repeated for several layers, then sealed. No UV lamp involved. Dip tends to be stronger than gel because of the layered powder structure, and many people find it lasts three to four weeks. It also builds a small amount of thickness onto the natural nail.
Best for: people who want more durability than gel without going to full extensions.
Acrylic
A liquid-and-powder mixture is sculpted onto the nail, either as a full extension over a tip or built up directly on the natural nail. This is the only one of the three that can meaningfully add length. It's also the most durable for people who work with their hands often. Regrowth means you'll need a fill every two to three weeks to keep the base looking clean.
Best for: length, nail art that needs a sturdy canvas, or hands that are hard on polish.
What about removal?
This is where people get burned by a bad experience and swear off a whole category unnecessarily. All three should be soaked off, not picked or filed off aggressively — that's what damages the natural nail underneath, not the product itself. At Lumé, removal is included free with a new set, and acetone soak-off is standard practice for all three.
A quick way to decide
- Want it to look like your real nail, just shinier? Gel.
- Want more strength without a UV lamp or added length? Dip.
- Want length, art, or maximum durability? Acrylic.
